Sample video for Massivan

Assistant photography:
Jesper Sørensen

Approximately 2min

Story:

This is merely a test for a much larger project. I first met Massivan in the spring of 2005, when Jesper & I went down to Zurich, to the white party at Volkshaus. 3 days before DJ Jokke had told me he was going to Zurich to play some dodgy afterparty venue at the outskirts of the city, and I immediately called up Massivan to see if Jokke´s gig by some cosmic luck would coincide with his schedule. And so it did…

I had first heard Massivan in Thailand through Anouschka, a wild child from Switzerland who had been a dedicated follower of Massivan and had several superbly mixed 12 track CDs that she claimed had been given to her. Perhaps then for the very first time I began to understand the power of electronic music. I recall Anouschka intimating in her cool, aloof accent and way: ”you know, this is not your typical techno, this is what I would call progressive trance, it´s very special….”. Fuck me, an all-time understatement! This DJ´s choice of beats, of pure wow-wah-wop, was and is on a par with the very best of 60s psychedelics, a journey into something much, much larger than just a simple string of songs. I still have one of those early mixes of his, and putting it on, in any state, at any time, will not only elevate your being & turn on your senses – it gives you an unmistakable feel of being at the mercy of a wizard, a musical virtuoso, who seem to know where you are and where you are going. Ultimately, the power of Massivan the DJ, in my opinion, stems from his effortless (it seems to onlookers) ability to produce a real feeling (in the track itself or as a result of the succession of tracks), and more importantly, a genuine sexual feeling at that.

At any rate, the man turned out to be truly sympathetic and indeed a wonderfully sexual being who simultaneously at least to me, exude the tenderness of a poet and the aesthetic appearance of an assassin – hence, much to his own delight, I named him the poet-assassin.The track featured here, albeit in abridged form, is Massivan´s own, and I, for one, think that once again he hit it right on the nail. Isn't that how most of us feel by now? :-)

Briefly put, my idea with Massivan has changed over the years. Now I believe, I will be making a portrait of the man.
