Martin Redlich: Photography / Editing

Ditte Ross: Direction / Editing

Story:

This was Ditte’s slot. Like myself, she had mastered the handheld style at this stage, but wasn’t happy with the acquired content she mustered to gather on her own. Additionally, she was annoyed with the obvious problems inherent in the one (wo)man-one (handheld) camera concept. Shooting on one’s own – no matter how well-prepared – the very eyeline direction of any interview-victim leaves much to be desired. In the light of this, I went to Vesterbro with her and over 2 days (as was the standard) we shot the program. The powers that be were ecstatic and thought our stuff was intimate and relevant to the many.

I like this particular Konzoom, mostly for Ditte’s ultimate decision to keep the rough stuff (like changing the aperture and filter) in the final version, which gave this program – like so many before and after it – a very unique touch and feeling of immediacy. Like the 48 Hours programs we had worked on together previously this short program had a real sense of being there and with that a genuine feel for the people starring in it. For Ditte when given free hands, the outcome or the sum total of these real people was by no means more important then their individual utterances. Contradictory and difficult as life and people ultimately are, Ditte has never had any problems with showing these ambiguities and never succumbing to the bullshit tactics of the ‘knowing’ journalist, almost always already – and very sadly – with his mind made up way before meeting up with a given interviewee….in other words: with little or no regard to the truth of the person….
