Story:
This is probably one of the most entertaining and trippy productions to date… I first met John Daly in a coffee bar in Thong Sala on Koh Phang Nan in the South of Thailand. Looking for a partying buddy (Schwartz was never very keen on going out) John and I quickly clicked and we subsequently spent over a month hanging out and not least going out. John is a great guy, street-wise and always a good laugh to hang around. He is also the first (and probably last) person with whom I will bring back prostitutes (see the story of “It's Gonna Take Some time”). He ended up owing me quite a lot of cash which the people around me seemed to worry much more about than I did – although a Mancunian hustler by all means, I just sensed that the guy would make it up to me once we were back in the Western world. And so he did! He arranged to come over and Ditte and I arranged it so that we could use his ‘expertise’ in the Konzoom slot. John is a natural in front of the camera and delivered all the way. Importantly, we got to meet the main people behind the club scene in Copenhagen at the time which put us on the guest lists on any night with a beat.
I am very proud of this 8-minute piece, and find the end bit particularly hilarious. Of course for those of you who do not speak Danish, some of the humorous moments will be lost as in the shift between John’s final remarks at Copenhagen Airport to the anchor's super-straight “and if you want to know about Clubbing in Copenhagen…” (website details). Additionally, Jean's (Danish) remarks on the secrets of night life (and how to make good business from it) is utterly priceless for its sheer manipulative freshness.
Along with Bubs, I went to Manchester to see John in the Spring of 2004. It was truly weird, a bit like walking into a huge collective hang-over. Having watched Michael Winterbottom's phenomenal 24 Hour Party People and meeting all these people who were involved with it all in the 80's & 90's today, I quickly came up with the idea for Party People in the 25th Hour, a project that is yet to be realized…
